There are many golf club makers today. Many of them are very good. But few are good enough to be rated on the top. It’s important to remember that the manufacturers are rated based on product sales. Custom golf clubs are made by several manufacturers, however the custom sector of golf club manufacturing is in a league of its own.
Currently, the top five golf club makers are Nike, TaylorMade, Callaway, Cobra, and Titleist. TaylorMade was 1979 by Gary Adams who wanted a better club to use with the two-piece balls. It went from a four person shop to one of the top five since it was first started.
Cobra is number two on the favorites list. Cobra was started in 1973 by Thomas Crow, an amateur golf player. Originally, they manufactured custom clubs but eventually expanded to standard clubs to place them in the top five today. Callaway is a 
well-known name in golf today. Started in the 80s by Ely Callaway, he personally would deliver the clubs to his clients.
Titleist began in 1910 as a rubber processing company and began making golf balls in 1932. The company later merged with a club maker and has been producing quality clubs since. Nike, as we all know, began as an athletic shoe manufacturer. Through the years, Nike has expanded into athletic apparel, an expanded shoe line specific to all sports, as well as sporting equipment such as golf clubs. Tiger Woods uses Nike golf clubs and currently holds a 20 year agreement with them.
There are literally millions of club makers out there. A person generally tries the products and picks which one they like best!
just like everything even golf clubs have many makers, I never know what to buy. So I always test them at a driving range pro shop than buy online where I can find them cheaper.
